Description:
1951 Chevrolet Bel Air Hardtop
One of the slickest looking Chevy models ever made before the shoeboxes arrived was the early Bel Air hardtop. The pillarless hardtop provides the open air freedom and look of a convertible and an ocean of chrome inside and out makes this car look like it is a hybrid between a jukebox and a car. Offered for sale at an affordable price, this is the kind of car you can get in, turn up the sound system and cruise anywhere you want to go. It is solid, dependable and economical with tons of PO-tential if you don___t wanna drive it like it is.
This Bowtie is finished in a two tone combination of South Pacific blue. Several years ago when this ride was just an idea, the coupe had just 51,000 clicks on the odometer, solid and free of any rust or decay. The original 6 cylinder engine, Powerglide and the rest of the drive train went into Davey Jones locker to provide a habitat for the fishes. The Bel Air got a transfusion in the form of a 307 CID V8, an updated 68 Powerglide, and a 57 Chevy Nomad rear end. The car purrs like a contented cat, and drives along at freeway speed at a miserly 20 mpg. The engine is fitted with an Edelbrock Torker intake manifold and AFB carburetor, HEI, high volume aluminum water pump, and Holley finned cast aluminum valve covers. The car runs cool under all conditions.
Here___s all the cool stuff about this car: Body paint is good and free of any major blemishes - just a few little badges of courage earned in about a decade of slow cruising. The engine, transmission and running gear are in very good condition. Starts at the first touch of the button when cold, every time. Recently we took this car on a 350 mile road trip and it performed flawlessly, used less than a half quart of oil, and never moved the temperature gauge past 175 degrees. It does not smoke or leak oil. The exhaust system is new and very, very quiet. It is downright sneaky, actually. The lakes pipes are cosmetic chrome only. New 225/55ZR17 tires are wrapped around some real spendy Boyd Coddington alloy rims and the shocks are new. All the original chrome is on this car. The underside is clean and rust free. The floorboards and firewall have aluminum sandwich insulation, so the car is very quiet on the highway. Unless, that is, you tweak the radio knobs. This Chevy has a sound system that will make old ladies and little kids go running for cover ___ the megawatt boom box rattles the ground for miles around if you crank it up. It has a little tail dragger stance thanks to some lowering blocks.
As we have stated, this Chevy has some gray hair. It has been around a while, and so there are a few things that need attention. The grille has some places where the chrome is peeling and lifting and the window frames are pitted. The interior chrome headliner trim has a few places where the plating has blistered, and there is also some pitting in some of the dash and door trim pieces. The window glass has some bubbling along the edges. The windshield has some minor pitting, a couple of chips. The white tuck n roll interior is free of any rips or tears, but a bit of yellowing is beginning to appear where the sun has focused through the curved glass. This car looks tremendous from 10 feet away, but a close up inspection will reveal that the lead seams are showing some shrinkage ___ particularly in the top. The original instrument cluster is oxidized and only the voltage and oil pressure gauges work. Fuel and temperature gauges have been added.
